Demand for hands-free cell phone accessories, including Bluetooth headsets, has skyrocketed in British Columbia, as the provincial government prepares to implement a new law banning the use of handheld cell phones while driving.
Recent changes to the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act, which take effect on January 1, will enable police officers to issue $167 tickets to drivers who are talking on the phone. Given that Bluetooth headsets are available for as little as $30, many B.C. drivers see them as a good investment.
They're pretty popular right now due to the fact the law is coming into effect, said Jeff Grout, assistant manager at The Source electronics store in Vancouver, noting that Bluetooth devices that clip onto car visors were a particularly hot item this Boxing Day.
Bluetooth devices operate by establishing a short-range wireless connection with a mobile phone, allowing users to carry on a conversation while keeping their hands free for other tasks.
