Saskatchewan's incumbent telecom carrier, SaskTel, has contracted Nokia Siemens Networks to built a new third-generation HSPA mobile broadband network in the prairie province.
Nokia Siemens will provide the core infrastructure for the network, as well as mobile soft switching and subscriber management systems.
SaskTel currently operates a CDMA2000 EV-DO mobile data network, and recently signed an agreement to share the joint HSPA network launched by Bell and Telus in November. Having its own HSPA network, however, will equip SaskTel for a smooth transition to fourth-generation Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the years to come.
