Canada's leading cell phone carrier, Rogers Wireless, has decided to make its free “data tethering” promotion permanent, allowing customers to use an Apple iPhone or other 3G device as a portable modem.
The offer, which had been set to expire on May 3, is open to Rogers customers with a 1GB+ mobile broadband plan. Any data that is downloaded onto a laptop is deducted from the user's monthly transfer allowance just as if they were using the smartphone alone.
By making the data tethering service permanent, Rogers has positioned itself to be competitive with rivals, Bell and Telus, which launched a joint HSPA+ network last fall and includes data tethering in 3G plans as a matter of course.
