Canada's leading cell phone carrier, Rogers Wireless, says it will release at least one Android-based Motorola smartphone next year, in hopes of diversifying its selection of advanced mobile handsets.
Rogers plans to launch a lot more smartphones, according to company president, Rob Bruce, noting that there will be a Motorola Android device in our portfolio in 2010.
Rogers' cell phone business has exceeded expectations in recent quarters, primarily due to the success of the Apple iPhone. The company now appears ready to take a risk on Motorola, which has lost market share in recent years and is seeking to rebuild its ailing handset division around Android-based smartphones.
Global smartphone sales increased 27% (year-over-year) in the second quarter, despite a 6.1% decline in the broader mobile handset market.
